Transforming the UK legal sector through tech

  • LawtechUK
  • LawtechUK Vision
  • LawtechUK Panel
  • Lawtech Sandbox Pilot

The legal and tech community have the opportunity and responsibility to restructure and reinvent legal services, to meet and exceed the evolving demands of business and society, in our digital world.
LawtechUK is a targeted work programme that is helping transform the UK legal sector through tech, delivered through a collaboration between Tech Nation, the LawtechUK Panel and the Ministry of Justice.

Digital dispute resolution rules – Your chance to contribute

Following the publication last year of the Legal Statement on Cryptoassets and Smart Contracts, the UK Jurisdiction Taskforce (UKJT) of LawtechUK is consulting on a possible new arbitration procedure aimed at facilitating the rapid, informal and cost-effective resolution of disputes arising out of novel technologies, including digital assets, smart contracts, blockchain and fintech. You can find out more and download the draft rules here.

Purpose of the consultation

The purpose of the consultation is to seek views on the following questions

  • Is there a need for or advantage in a new arbitral process aimed at facilitating the rapid, informal and cost-effective resolution of disputes arising out of novel digital technologies?
  • Does the process as described in the draft rules meet that need?
  • And if not, why?

How to get involved

We welcome your feedback. You can submit your contribution here or by email to UKJT@justice.gov.uk.

You can also hear from the drafting team and post questions to the UKJT by registering here for a webinar on 26 February 2021 at 15.30 – 16.45 GMT. We look forward to seeing you there.

The deadline for responses is 5 March 2021.

Defining Lawtech

We think of lawtech as technology that supports or enables the provision of legal services or dispute resolution systems – the term is roughly synonymous with legaltech or legal technology.

Lawtech includes technology used by legal service providers and the justice community to help them deliver legal services or resolve disputes. It also includes technology that allows businesses and individuals to take care of their own legal matters.

The UK has emerged as a hub for startups and scaleups developing lawtech products and services. Here are some key facts on this growing tech sector.

The Landscape

4,480Employed by lawtech startups and scaleup
£290.4mRaised by lawtech startups and scaleups
15%Female founded
8%At growth stage

(correct as of May 2020)

Lawtech startups and scaleups play a pivotal role in the advancement of the wider lawtech sector, which also encompasses the law firms, the in-house and justice community, established tech companies, academics, alternative legal service providers and more, who are developing lawtech and/or embracing digital innovation.

Lawtech is becoming increasingly central to the delivery of legal services and dispute resolution systems, helping to meet and exceed the needs of business and society in our digital world.
