Net Zero Investor Index
Presenting the UK's top climate-tech trailblazers
Headline Partner
Introduction
The UK’s climate-tech ecosystem weaves together a rich tapestry of sectors, sub-sectors and above all, cutting-edge technologies - with the power to transform our planet. At the heart of this change lies a fundamental belief that mission-driven companies are the catalyst to creating a sustainable, stronger future. For the UK to reach its ambition of driving down global emissions by 2050, these trailblazers are a critical piece of the puzzle. On the global front, the major headline this year has been that VC investment has increased by 5x in the last seven years. This increased momentum and pattern of investment is reflected to a degree in the UK as well. In the course of three years, the number of climate-tech deals have nearly doubled.
Net zero in numbers
Despite the fact our world ground to a halt in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, UK climate-tech and agriculture investment has reached a record-breaking level by 2020, with $412m being raised in the fourth quarter alone. To put this into perspective, this is a 21% increase overall, as noted in the Tech Nation Report 2021. This puts a spotlight on the fact that this sector is growing from strength to strength - with early stage companies setting up an impressive pipeline.
What sets our cohort apart?
Our Net Zero 1.0 Cohort comprises an impressive array of companies at the frontier of ground-breaking innovation in their fields. These companies have proven their products carry market traction, and have raised on average £2.2m already, with 14% securing over £3m till date. Our 'Fellow' companies on the programme, which are later stage have raised on average £19.22m already, with 50% securing over £30m. As part of the Net Zero Programme, each company was selected after a rigorous application process, assessed by expert judges. They have received coaching, peer-peer learning as well as workshops to guide their scaling journeys.
Our companies by sector
"Climate change is the existential threat facing us all. Tech Nation's Net Zero initiative is just the boost the emerging and exciting sector of potential solutions needs to drive awareness, investment and growth"
Tom Adeyoola, Non Executive Director at Verco
"Investing in new technologies is a crucial part of the fight against climate change - making alternative solutions cheaper and better than the incumbents will accelerate the zero carbon transition. I'm excited to bring my experience as a climate technology investor to help the Tech Nation Net Zero programme."

Dairy farming emits over 1.7 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent a year. Better Dairy is building the future of food by developing completely animal-free dairy products that are molecularly identical to traditional dairy, using a similar process to beer brewing. Removing animals from dairy production isn’t only great for animals and the environment, but gives consumers better food options and food manufacturers better ingredients.

Tyres are the automotive industry’s big dirty secret, contributing enormously to carbon-emissions, air-pollution and micro-plastic pollution. Despite electric vehicles (EVs) accelerating towards a carbon-neutral future, tyres have thus far been neglected. EVs are heavier and have higher torque, wearing tyres faster and creating more harmful tyre pollution than normal cars. ENSO addresses this problem by developing more efficient, durable and sustainable tyres for EVs.

Topolytics’ WasteMap® analytics platform addresses the data deficit in the waste sector by ingesting, cleaning and analysing waste data at scale. We aggregate and clean live, granular data on waste types, amounts and movements to generate insights for waste producers, the waste industry and government. These insights enable greater materials recovery, drive operational efficiencies, support investment strategies, enhance transparency and reduce carbon emissions through the waste supply chain. Topolytics is acknowledged by Cleantech Group, IDC and SAP as a leading analytics player in the €2Bn ‘waste tech’ sector.
