Calling UK Cyber Security companies – Applications for Cyber 2.0 are now open

Ollie Bone, January 14, 2020 4 min read

We’re very excited to open applications for our cyber security growth programme Cyber 2.0. After the resounding success of last year’s inaugural Cyber sector programme, with companies such as CybSafe, Red Sift and ISMS.Online among the graduating cohort, we’re looking for the next tranche of pre-Series A Cyber stars looking to accelerate their growth.

“A first year of any programme is a challenge, and it’s a credit to both Tech Nation and the amazing cohort that 2019 was such a success. In the last decade, Cyber Security has shifted from obscurity in the public consciousness, to being very much on the world stage. Cyber weapons are now part of the modern arsenal and the next decade will see Cyber Security become a tangible and omnipresent threat.

Therefore, we embark on our second year looking to make a disproportionately large impact on the companies we support. We encourage the very best to come forward as we hope UK companies can be at the forefront of protecting individuals in the years to come”

Ollie Bone, Cyber Lead, Tech Nation

“In terms of peer-to-peer learning, Tech Nation Cyber has been utterly, utterly phenomenal. From the very first session, we had the founders of Darktrace and Digital Shadows sharing their warts-and-all stories. These are the people who’ve been there and done it.”

Mike Newman, My1Login, Cyber 1.0 alumni

With the incredible success of our debut year, our second Cyber programme promises to be even better, with the scale coaches and speaker list featuring the best of UK cyber security and tech, including  Dave Palmer (Darktrace), James Chappell (Digital Shadows), James Hadley (Immersive Labs) and Lesley Eccles (FanDuel & HelloRelish).

“Cyber in the UK is performing strongly on the global stage, and UK companies are at the forefront, pioneering new technologies and developing new approaches to stay ahead of the game. Demonstrating the UK’s world-leading position in cyber security, since 2015, London has accounted for over 7% of global cyber investment, more than San Francisco. With innovative UK cyber security companies being rewarded with record investment, we hope that through Cyber 2.0, the sector will continue its impressive growth trajectory.”

George Windsor, Head of Insights, Tech Nation

We are looking for the UK cyber security companies that are ready to scale and achieve their full potential. So if this sounds like you, apply now.

The programme

Tech Nation’s Cyber 2.0 programme will help the UK’s fastest-growing cyber security companies on their scaling journey.

“Tech Nation has been excellent in focusing our senior management on the important steps needing to be taken to scale a business. With the startup space often fast paced and manic, Tech Nation Cyber has provided the perfect platform for SaltDNA to reassess growth objectives and set clear tasks to achieve our ambitious objectives.”

John Bailie, Salt DNA, Cyber 1.0 alumni

Running over the course of 6 months, 20 companies will receive over 60 hours of support, delivered by over 20 scale coaches.

Tech Nation Cyber, as all other Tech Nation growth programmes, is free, and we don’t take an equity stake in any businesses that join.

Over the 6 month period, joining companies will take part in:

  • Workshops – founder-focused sessions delivered by world-leading scale coaches, tackling fundamental growth barriers such as culture, talent and international expansion
  • Meetups –  senior-leader focussed sessions delivered by selected scaling experts. Cyber 2.0 will also see the launch of a new Young Leaders meetup, focused on how growing companies can nurture and retain young talent.
  • International trip – In collaboration with DIT, the cohort will explore a relevant international territory with the view to assist and inform the cohort on their journey towards international expansion. Last year our cohort visited New York and Washington DC.
  • Peer Networking – learn from and with programme peers and scale coaches. The programme will also offer the chance to connect with Cyber’s prestigious alumni network.

“The best part about the programme has been the peer learning. We are all encountering the same challenges and being able to leverage the network has decreased our time spent on research and helped us to avoid potential pitfalls in our business strategy.”

Andrew Martin, Dynarisk, Cyber 1.0 alumni

The criteria

Cyber 2.0 is looking to support the UK’s fastest-growing cyber security tech companies to scale faster. Qualifying companies must meet the following criteria:

  • Cyber security focused – as this is a sector specific programme, it stands to reason that companies must have cyber security at the heart of their offering.
  • UK HQ – Companies headquarters must be based in the United Kingdom.
  • 10+ employees
  • Seed funding at minimum, or £500,000+ in revenue if bootstrapped

If the criteria matches your company, get in touch. Applications close on 14th February 2020.

“Fortium have learnt a lot from the Cohort – from how to scale our sales team and close out larger contracts, to attracting the correct talent and investment. Ultimately, Tech Nation Cyber has enabled us to think bigger than we have done in the past and aspirations have turned into constructive plans. We now have the knowledge and contacts to succeed, our goals becoming more focussed with this in mind”

Michael Nixon, Fortium, Cyber 1.0 alumni

The judges

To make sure we include the best scaling cyber security companies in the UK, we have curated a prestigious panel of cyber experts to select our second cohort.

The panel includes names such as: Joe Dauncey (CISO of NATS), Becky Pinkard (CISO of Aldemore Bank) and Dr Emma Philpott, MBE (IASME Consortium).

“The biggest advantage of being part of Tech Nation has been the opportunity to grow our network of connections”

Randal Pinto, Red Sift, Cyber 1.0 alumni

“The Tech Nation Cyber programme has been extremely valuable both in terms of networking opportunities, and for raising our profile with potential investors – several of whom we have met through the programme. It’s been great to periodically take some time out from day-to-day operations to think about the business more strategically. All the CEOs have found it really valuable to share experiences and lessons learned, and I’m convinced we’ll all improve the way we do business as a result”

David Chalmers, Skurio, Cyber 1.0 alumni

We can’t wait to help the next generation of ground-breaking UK cyber security companies ascend to the next level. If you think your company might fit the bill, then apply today. Applications close on 14th February 2020.

Tech Nation Cyber 2.0 is supported by our partners CBRE, RSM, Talent Works International and Wilson Sonsini.
