Every startup founder has their own unique story on what drove them down the road of entrepreneurship. For some it’s about building great products and scaling companies while others might be driven exclusively by a desire to solve a problem or making a positive difference in the world.
Adam Pritchard is an early-stage entrepreneur with a clear mission: to disrupt ecommerce and level the playing field for all online sellers by ‘giving them the keys to a Porsche but only charging for the petrol’.
He is the founder and CEO of Manchester-based Shopit, described as the UK’s only ‘pay as you grow’ ecommerce platform which provides all sellers with ‘enterprise-level features’ from day one but only charges them as they sell and grow.
We speak to the entrepreneur to find out more.
What problem are you trying to solve with Shopit?
Adam Pritchard: Shopit was bootstrapped from within a digital agency, having listened to ecommerce customer problems for years. They all wanted to scale and grow but couldn’t yet afford the big software they needed to do it – a perfect Catch 22. So we’ve been working to bring a full on ERP system to the masses, that they can use for national and international growth.
Most online sellers’ problems stem from limited resources combined with unlimited ambition. Why should they have to upgrade for features all the time? Why should they fork out money up front when they’ve not yet sold a bean? We want business to be fair.
I believe in democratising the web for online sellers by giving them every ecommerce feature we can from day one on a pay-as-you-grow basis. Give them the keys to the Porsche but only charge for petrol – and watch them go!
What drives you as an entrepreneur?
I’ve always been told that I’m a champion of the underdog. From school clubs and student magazines, to growing an inclusive junior football club that focused on social integration, I’ve realised that Shopit is the culmination of my life.
I was a council estate kid to a single mum on benefits, but I got my lucky breaks that changed my mindset and my life and I want to do the same for others. That’s my drive as an entrepreneur – to change the status quo for the better. It’s about breaking glass ceilings, breaking traditions and making people happy.
What separates Shopit from the competition?
It’s our values and our ‘why’. Any platform could give you all the functionality you want at the same low price, but they won’t.
Every platform seems to demand more money for things that might not work for you. We simply say: “Here you go, have the whole tool box and good luck.”
What is it like being a tech company in the North West?
Tech in the North West is vibrant, exciting but incredibly tough.
All the founders and ‘gamechangers’ I’ve met have phenomenal thick skin and resilience, because getting help when you’re small is very difficult.
What’s the biggest challenge ahead of you?
Shopit has an incredible opportunity to change the direction of ecommerce, and how subscription software works by making it far more accessible to the masses. We know it’s a fabulous platform from two years of competitive research, and everyone we speak to has a ‘wow’ moment. Our own challenges are also of scale – communication and educating the business world that there’s a different way of doing things.
What’s the grand plan for the company?
Shopit is a very inclusive company, working with other technology and agency partners to increase functionality, and widen the platform’s reach. We have a vision of gaining five per cent of the global ecommerce software market which is growing exponentially. Ultimately it’s about being proud of helping others be successful – that will keep us jumping out of bed in the morning.
