Next up in our Tech Nation 2016 series – it’s Newcastle and Durham.

With the second highest salary growth of any city in the UK at 26.6%, Newcastle & Durham continues to build on its tech history; the technological institution, Sage, is still driving employment and innovation in the area.

In addition to long established digital tech companies, Newcastle & Durham has produced Reframed.tv and Leaf.fm, both of which were finalists of our recent Northern Stars competition. And Newcastle-based Moltin just raised $2 million from US VCs.

The area’s benefits for digital tech businesses include the high level of talent available. This is coupled with support from the co-working space Campus North, the angel-led accelerator programme Ignite, and venture capital firm Northstar Ventures, which has over £95m under management.

Further support comes in the form of Dynamo North East, The North East Technology Fund, and Newcastle Science Central office spaces, called The Core.

Digital tech businesses in this cluster are more likely than those in any other to receive support from an accelerator, and the second most likely to receive mentoring support.
