Cast your mind back to 1990, the dawn of the digital technology revolution. A year after Tim Berners-Lee created the world-wide web in 1990, 2.8 million people used the internet, equating to 0.05% of the world’s population. Thirty-two years later, that number has skyrocketed to 5.07 billion people, representing 63.5% of the global population.
While technology has in many ways enhanced modern life across work, leisure and communication, the sector’s growth has had a hugely detrimental effect on the environment, both through the proliferation of companies within the sector and the mass propagation of data, which consume a significant proportion of countries' electricity supplies.
Today, the industry accounts for 4% of global emissions, with that figure likely to substantially rise as digital technology continues to permeate every aspect of life. It is clear there needs to be a significant focus and advocacy towards decarbonising data centres, through transitioning to renewables, advancing cooling methods and other key energy-saving technologies. But beyond this, there is a significant amount we, as tech companies, can and must do to tackle the climate crisis.
Over the last few years, the growth of companies committing to net zero emissions has increased immensely. In 2019, just 16% of the global economy had a net zero commitment. By 2021, nearly 70% had committed to net zero by 2050. Along with societal pressure, this was, in part, driven by the growth and increased accessibility of carbon accounting platforms, allowing companies to measure their emissions and set formal net zero targets.
However, guidance on how to reduce emissions has been fuelled with a perpetual stream of conflicting and confusing messaging, often leading to companies not knowing where to start. This is particularly pertinent within the tech sector, with, on average, 80% - 100% of a company's emissions falling outside of their direct control and largely within the supply chain. This is coupled with unclear guidance on carbon removals. Today, the IPCC estimates 10 billion tonnes per year of removals is needed to reach net zero by 2050. In 2021, only 40 million tonnes was captured globally, representing the challenge at hand.
Through this report, we aim to shine a light on the actions tech companies can take right away to act for the climate, through emissions reduction and scaling carbon removals. We highlight the progress we have made since co-creating Tech Zero last year, actively supporting 350 companies to create net zero strategies. As part of this, the report showcases examples of companies who have already taken significant steps to reduce their emissions, including an overview of Tech Nation’s emissions and net zero strategy. We hope that by outlining the tangible actions companies can take, it will support others to begin or continue taking climate action. Achieving net zero will not happen overnight and no company can achieve net zero on their own. It requires collective action, since it covers every aspect of a company's value chain. The key is to make a start and not to let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
In 2021, even as COP26 highlighted the urgent need to keep global warming below 1.5℃, research by the British Chambers of Commerce showed that only a third of UK businesses had an environmental sustainability policy or were working to reduce carbon emissions.
A more recent survey by ESG_VC highlighted that decarbonisation practices are even more patchy across startups and scaleups in the UK, with only 11% measuring carbon emissions and 7% having a net zero strategy.
For small businesses like tech scaleups, implementing a net zero strategy can be challenging due to limited budget, resources and knowledge. Two-thirds of SMEs in the UK say they lack the knowledge and skills to take action, and just under half (48%) say they lack funding to do so, according to SME Climate Hub.
But another factor may also be holding back the tech sector in particular: a misconception that tech companies do not produce significant carbon emissions. Tech company CEOs are more likely than CEOs in any other sector to cite this reason for not making a net zero commitment; 74% of tech CEOs without a net zero strategy put themselves in this category compared to 57% across all sectors, revealed PwC’s Annual Global CEO Survey in 2022.
The Tech Zero initiative - led by Tech Nation and leading tech companies - aims to tackle both challenges, providing resources for startups and scaleups on their net zero strategies and obligating members to measure and publish their emissions annually. Doing so will inevitably dispel claims that tech companies do not have significant carbon footprints or significant work to do in order to reach net zero. Moreover, net zero service provider Supercritical has calculated that net zero plans should cost companies only £400 to £600 per employee per year - an achievable budget for many startups and scaleups.
Already there are noticeable shifts in attitudes, behaviour and commitments. Employees, investors and customers are increasingly asking companies to measure and reduce carbon emissions. Research by Supercritical found that 26% of employees want more opportunities to share feedback on their company’s climate action plan. At the same time, the majority of c-suite leaders (71%) are now feeling pressure from investors to implement sustainability plans, and three-quarters experience this pressure from both board members and customers, a 2022 Deloitte study found.
Nonetheless, setting net zero targets and plans is only the first step. According to Supercritical, even many of those that have made net zero commitments haven’t done robust carbon accounting. Only 35% of UK-based businesses with net zero targets have collected their emissions baseline data and are prepared to measure their emissions going forward.
For some sub-sectors in tech, this could soon become a practical problem. Healthtech companies, for example, must prove they are taking action on climate change in order to supply services or products to the NHS. From April 2023 NHS procurement conditions will become stricter; suppliers on contracts over £5m will have to publish carbon reduction plans and by 2030 suppliers will only qualify for NHS contracts if they can demonstrate their emissions reduction progress.
In practice, complete decarbonisation - producing no carbon emissions - is likely to take years if not decades even for the most ambitious companies. In the interim, net zero targets will almost always require carbon removals alongside emission reductions. A review of 25 multinational companies which have made public climate pledges found that 19 already know they will rely on carbon removals to reach their targets.
This can also be assumed for startups and scaleups in tech; without investing in carbon removals few companies would achieve ambitious net zero targets, putting this emerging area in a pivotal role for scaleups’ net zero plans.

We've been so inspired by how tech founders intuitively understand the urgent scaling challenge facing carbon removal. Founders get scaling and being early adopters and they are the perfect early buyers for carbon removal.
More than this, employees at tech companies clearly care about climate change and are pressuring their companies to act. One of the most common reasons why businesses work with us is because their team are asking them tough questions about the climate, so every question you ask in an all hands or climate-related response in employee survey makes a difference! In our own survey of UK employees, we've found over one-third would leave their employer if they didn't act on climate change and even in a recession, 32% would be uncomfortable with their employers cutting sustainability budget.
Most tech companies - particularly startups and scaleups - find that the majority, if not all their emissions fall into ‘scope 3’ - indirect emissions from purchased goods and services including rented office spaces, as opposed to direct emissions from company cars or energy consumed by owned assets.
Though the emissions are ‘indirect’, they can actually be more straightforward to tackle than direct emissions, with policies and climate-driven decisions in operational areas like food, offices, travel and service providers. Unlike for owned assets producing direct emissions, changes can be implemented quickly or else purchasing power used to engage with suppliers on their own net zero plans.
Low-hanging fruit to reduce emissions include mandating only plant based meals at work events, reducing unnecessary travel particularly by flight, which is actively working towards net zero , and choosing a ‘green’ pension provider for employees.
If these policies were implemented across the entire tech sector in the UK, what would be the overall reduction in carbon emissions?
Assuming that the number of startups and tech companies currently following these policies is negligible overall, we’ve estimated the collective impact which could be achieved in each area.
In total, emissions reductions could reach 81.8m tonnes of CO2 if the entire tech sector were to implement policies on sustainable offices, green pensions, vegan food and reducing travel. This is equivalent to 17.6m petrol-powered cars driving for a year, 10.3m homes’ energy consumption for a year, or emissions from 206 natural gas power plants for a year. It would take 1.35bn tree seedlings planted for 10 years to remove this amount of carbon.
Sustainable offices
If the entire tech sector just leased offices which used 100% renewable energy (on-site or purchased), it would reduce emissions by up to 1.23m tonnes of CO2 each year.
This is equivalent to 265,000 petrol-powered cars driven for a year, 155,000 homes’ energy use for a year, or even emissions from 3 natural-gas power plants for a year. Other methods to avoid this amount of CO2 emitted would require 334 wind turbines running for a year or 53.2m bin liners worth of waste recycled rather than landfilled. It would take 20.3m tree seedlings grown for 10 years to remove this amount of carbon.

Green pensions
If the entire tech community were to use sustainability-focused pension funds, it would reduce emissions by 78.72m tonnes of CO2 each year.
This is equivalent to 17m petrol-powered cars driven for a year, 9.9m homes’ energy use for a year, or emissions from 198 natural gas power plants for a year. Equivalent emissions could be avoided through 21,397 wind turbines running for a year or 3.4bn bin liners worth of waste recycled rather than landfilled. It would take 1.3bn tree seedlings grown for 10 years to remove this amount of carbon.

Plant based food
If all meals served at events hosted by or primarily attended by tech startups and scaleups were plant based, it would reduce emissions by 465k tonnes CO2 each year.
This is the equivalent of emissions from 100k petrol-powered vehicles driven for a year, or 58,573 homes’ energy use for a year, or 19m propane-fuelled home barbecues. Equivalent emissions could be avoided with 126 wind turbines running for a year or 20m bin liners worth of waste recycled instead of landfilled. It would take 7.7m tree seedlings grown for 10 years to remove this amount of carbon.

Travel reductions
If tech employees reduced their business travel and hotel stays by half, and commute travel by a third, it would reduce emissions by 1.42m tonnes CO2 each year. This is the equivalent of emissions from 306k petrol-powered cars driving for a year, 179k homes’ energy consumption for a year, or 3.6k natural gas power plants. Equivalent emissions could be avoided with 386 wind turbines running for a year, or 61.5m bin liners worth of waste recycled instead of landfilled. It would take 23.5m tree seedlings grown for 10 years to remove this amount of carbon.

- Assumption that it’s feasible and reasonable for tech employees to reduce their business travel by half, their commute by a third and hotel stays by half, to be replaced with video calls or alternative communication.
- Calculations showed reductions: 97.4k tonnes CO2 for flights, 238.2k tonnes CO2 for business travel, 532.3k tonnes CO2 for commute travel, and 554.1k tonnes CO2 for hotel stays.
Below are a series of tangible steps you can take to begin your decarbonisation journey. They are intended to guide good practice, and please bear in mind that any steps in the right direction are better than none; as many contributors to this report have stated, don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.
1. Commit to a net zero action plan
The first step in any net zero plan is to measure your emissions. These are categorised into scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
For tech companies, around 80% of emissions will fall into scope 3, so it’s important you measure as much as possible! It’s also important to make it clear if you’ve excluded any of your scope 3 emissions, and why (for example if you can’t get data on them or there are other limiting factors).
The next step is to set an ambitious but achievable net zero target and make a plan to get there. You should aim to halve your emissions across all scopes by 2030. This sounds daunting, but the first halving is often the simplest.
To take action:
- Measure your emissions yourself using online tools and resources.
- To do it manually, Tech Zero provides a guide on how to calculate your emissions.
- Use available resources including free tools from GoCardless and Carbon Footprint and a GHG emissions calculations tool by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
- Or, work with a carbon footprinting company to measure your emissions.
- The following sustainability services have been recommended by Tech Zero members: Watershed, Altruistiq, Carbon Analytics, Compare Your Footprint, Lune, Patch, Spherics and Supercritical.
- Set science-based targets
- If you are a larger company (500+ employees), set your target through the Science-based Targets Initiative (SBTi) to align your actions with environmental science.
- If you are a smaller company, aim to at least halve your emissions across all scopes by 2030. You can also set targets with help from a carbon accountancy.
- Look at your emissions measurements and identify what contributes the most CO2.
- Assess how you could reduce these emissions, and lay these solutions out in terms of time, effort and impact.
- Set interim targets, including what actions you’ll take in the next 12 months, the next 2-3 years, and by 2030.

2. Commit to net zero aligned offices
Making sure your office is a low-emission space is a fundamental part of your net zero strategy. Fortunately, many office spaces are now committing to net zero and actively decarbonising.
Net zero aligned office spaces should be:
- Using 100% renewable energy (ideally generated on-site through solar panels, for example, but it can also be by purchasing renewable energy from a provider)
- Ensuring AC systems are are well maintained, and are topped up with refrigerants with low Global Warming Potentials
- Being highly energy efficient as possible - for example, by using climate control facilities
- Measuring emissions, and having a clear reduction strategy
- Having a comprehensive recycling, compost and zero waste policy
- Uses sustainable materials in construction
To take action:
- Prepare an email to send out to your building manager or request a meeting, asking whether they have a net zero strategy in place and actions they have taken (in accordance with the above).
- If the landlord has no intention to switch;
- Request energy use break-down or estimates that cover your use within the building
- Explore purchasing REGOS and RGGOs from TheBigCleanSwitch
- Consider moving to a more sustainable office space
3. Commit to green pensions
The average pension finances 23 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year, so choosing the right pension can be a powerful tool in the fight against climate change.
According to the green pensions guide, pension funds should:
- Target net zero across its portfolio and halve emissions by 2030
- Invest in climate solutions
- Divest from companies that are not reducing emissions
To take action:
- Sign up to the green pensions charter.
- Set up a meeting with your pension provider, and ensure the default fund for your employees is covered by a net zero target.
- If it isn’t covered by a net zero target, look to switch providers. MakeMyMoneyMatter can help you understand the impact of your pension fund and communicate with them if necessary.
4. Reduce meat consumption
Meat consumption has an outsized negative impact on the environment: a meat-based diet produces double the carbon emissions of a vegetarian one.
These emissions mainly come from farmland management, land use change and methane from ruminant livestock (a greenhouse gas ~34x more potent than CO2). Changing their eating habits is one of the biggest ways an individual can influence their footprint. It doesn’t have to be an “all or nothing” approach: small changes can add up over time.
To take action:
- Arrange a lunch and learn or opt-in discussion to educate your team
- Run a survey or discussion to gather employee opinion and engagement potential
- Discuss practical next steps with your operations team e.g. purchasing more plant-based foods and milks for your office.
- Ensure all meals at internal and external events are plant-based.
5. Review your business travel
The way a company travels can significantly impact their level of emissions and embedding sustainability policies early on is a great way to reduce their impact as companies scale and travel is more of a necessity. As an example, taking the train instead of a flight between London and Scotland could save about 250 kg CO2e.
To take action:
- A train-first policy is recommended for all companies, at least for travel that is under 6 hours, where it is achievable by train.
- Promote virtual meetings and invest in digital tools (Miro, Fellow etc.) and training that will make remote meetings more productive.
- Optimise unavoidable travel: Try to include numerous relevant meetings within a single trip
- Implement a 1-person travel policy for longer flights e.g. only send the most relevant team member to a conference
- Optimise unavoidable travel: Try to include numerous relevant meetings within a single trip.
- Promote virtual meetings and invest in digital tools (Miro, Fellow etc.) and training that will make remote meetings more productive.
- Implement an ‘essential only’ travel policy for longer flights e.g. only send the most relevant team member to a conference.
6. Engage with your suppliers
Within the tech sector, 80 - 100% of companies’ emissions come from their suppliers, counting towards scope 3 emissions. If scaling tech companies are going to achieve net zero, it will require collaboration and collective action.The best way to influence these emissions is to communicate with suppliers and encourage them to measure and reduce their own emissions, if suppliers have not already. Beyond this, it’s important to set standards for the suppliers a company works with moving forwards. The better a company understands their supply chain, the better a company will be at measuring their footprint and understanding where the hotspots lie.
To take action:
- Identify the suppliers that significantly contribute to your footprint
Prepare an email that asks them:- If they have measured their emissions (and which emissions sources are included). If they haven’t, suggest companies or resources they can use
- What their net zero target is, if they have one
- Details of their carbon reduction and removal strategy
- Draft a procurement policy that requires suppliers to measure their footprint by 2024 and have a net zero target by 2025.
7. Reduce digital emissions
While we don’t typically associate the online world with being unsustainable, any time we visit a website or send an email, a small amount of carbon dioxide is emitted. Collectively, digital emissions today account for more than the global aviation industry, accounting for 4% of global emissions. It’s a reminder that small actions can create a huge impact both for the better and for the worse.
Fortunately, there are steps companies can take to tackle their digital emissions. Wholegrain Digital and Business Declares published the Digital Declutter Toolkit to specifically support companies measure and reduce their digital emissions. While a large part of a companies digital emissions rely on the sustainability of their cloud-based provider, companies can still take accountability to reduce emissions.
To take action:
- Clean out unused files from cloud storage drives and websites
- Avoid storing the same files in multiple places
- Select a cloud storage provider with a commitment to use 100% renewable energy
8. Reduce hardware emissions
As part of a company's digital emissions strategy, companies can take action by reducing emissions associated with their hardware equipment used for the online world, such as mobiles, laptops and monitors. This can be done by extending the life of devices companies may already have and purchasing models with low environmental footprints, including refurbished items.
To take action:
- Set a goal to use your hardware for a minimum of four years before it’s retired and ensure your ops/IT team track against that metric
- When planning your hardware purchases, check product environmental reports e.g.Apple and Dell, and choose efficient options
- Consider purchasing refurbished laptops
- Work with professional repair services, to ensure long use of hardware
9. Invest in carbon removals
Scaling carbon removals is vital if the world is to reach net zero by 2050. Currently, 10 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions will need to be removed from the atmosphere annually if we are to reach that goal. To achieve this, permanent carbon removals need to be scaled by 20,000 times from today’s levels. Accordingly, while not to distract from emissions reduction, any investment that can be directed towards carbon removals has a disproportionately powerful effect in helping this market mature.
Alongside this, there is no single solution that has the ability to scale to 10 billion tonnes, so we need multiple methods to scale to a gigatonne plus level. A portfolio approach allows companies to invest in a variety of carbon removal methods, to ensure both nature based projects and technological carbon removals are supported.
Carbon removals come in two forms: natural solutions and technological solutions. Examples of natural solutions include afforestation, kelp farming, biochar and soil carbon sequestration. On the other hand, examples of technological solutions include direct air capture, which uses fans to filter carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and enhanced weathering, a method that involves storing carbon in the ocean through a chemical reaction that removes CO2 in the atmosphere.
To take action:
- Commit to a plan to invest in high-quality, long-term carbon removals, not avoidance offsets
- Set targets to increase the amount of long-term removals you purchase between now and your company’s net zero target year.
- Use trusted sustainability services to ensure your purchases are high quality. For example:

Tech Zero was founded in March 2021 by Tech Nation, alongside the UK’s leading tech companies, to spur tech companies around the world to commit to climate action. Members commit to:
- Measuring and publishing emissions annually and setting an ambitious net zero target within a year of joining.
- Publishing more details about how they plan to reach net zero, including setting a net zero target date and short-term targets.
- Halving emissions by 2030 across all scopes.
- Appointing a member of the executive team to be responsible and accountable for their net zero target.
- Communicating climate commitments in other meaningful ways, including to customers.
- Reporting progress on short and medium term targets to their Board annually, and on their website.
Tech Zero has grown rapidly, reaching 350 members, over half of whom have committed to reaching Net Zero before or by 2040.
Members represent 28 sub-sectors; the top three most common are IT, sustainability services and finance.
159 members have a net zero target on or before 2030, with another 35 planning to reach net zero on or before 2040.
Tech Zero supports tech companies of all stages and sizes to minimise their climate impact. Right now, 42% of members are micro businesses (with fewer than 10 employees), 33% are small businesses (10-50 employees), 15% are medium-sized businesses (50-250 employees), 6% are large businesses (250-1000 employees), and 4% are large corporates (over 1000 employees).
2022 achievements
Beyond the members’ commitment to emissions monitoring and reduction, Tech Zero promotes climate-positive action in the tech sector through resources, partnerships and working groups.
In 2022, Tech Zero initiated a tracking process to ensure members are fulfilling the Tech Zero commitments, and enabling Tech Zero to offer targeted help when needed. This included creating a way for members to report their emissions data and net zero plans. 41 companies have published net zero plans since joining Tech Zero - 23% of members who have been a member for over 12 months.
To raise the profile of net zero action in the tech sector, Tech Zero created badges to help members shout about their achievements - when they’ve fulfilled the commitments to the highest standard, reached emission reduction milestones, and of course, reached net zero! 13 members have earned the badge for completing the Tech Zero commitments to the highest standard.
Tech Zero hosted 15 events, and featured at 10 others, including at COP27.
New partnerships criteria have been designed to make sure Tech Zero provides useful offers and discounts to members, and makes net zero solutions as accessible as possible.
Tech Zero has partnered with several scaling businesses to provide members with cheaper, easier access to measurement, reduction, and removal services. Over the past year, Tech Zero has:
- Secured substantial discounts from carbon accounting companies for Tech Zero members to measure their emissions and create emission reduction and carbon removal strategies, including from Supercritical, Net Zero Now, GoCodeGreen, and Compare Your Footprint
- Worked with Big Clean Switch to help companies reduce their emissions from energy use; and with junee to reduce waste from office lunches.
- Collaborated with Climeworks on a first-of-its-kind offer to provide members with the ability to collectively invest in direct air capture and lower the cost per tonne of carbon removal.
- Helped companies engage their employees in climate action through Couch to Carbon Zero, Giki, and onHand.
Resources
In 2022, Tech Zero produced a guide so companies can measure carbon emissions themselves, and updated the Tech Zero Toolkit to be more comprehensive than ever.
Looking ahead
Tech Zero aims to become the largest group of tech companies committed to climate action in the world. We want to see more people join, but more importantly, we want to see people fulfilling their commitments. Next year we expect to see real emissions reductions from members, as it’s the second year they’ll be reporting.
In 2023, Tech Zero plans to:
- Ramp up government engagement, and continuing to feed into policy initiatives via Coadec.
- Establish a lively online community space where members can turn to peers for advice, solutions, and share experiences.
- Improve guidance for international members
- Publish its first benchmarking study, modelling emissions savings across all currently reported members.
Tech Nation’s commitment to reaching net zero involves measuring and publicly publishing carbon emissions each year. Not only does this track our progress but it also highlights operational areas which are contributing the most to our carbon footprint. This enables us to make concrete changes to our business activities so that we keep progressing towards net zero.
This year, we worked with Supercritical to measure our emissions and set an in depth emissions reduction strategy. Supercritical are an alumni company from the net zero programme and have previously partnered with us through Tech Zero.
Supercritical’s methodology is aligned with the GHG Protocol standard which was developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI), and is used by governments and cities all over the world as well as over 92% of Fortune 500 companies.
Below are the key insights from Supercritical, and how we are using them to actively reduce our carbon footprint going forward.
Our emissions
Between April 2021 and March 2022, Tech Nation’s carbon footprint was 280 tonnes of CO2 emitted - all within the ‘Scope 3’ emissions (indirect emissions from purchased goods and services).
This carbon footprint works out as 3.25 tonnes of CO2 per employee at Tech Nation - significantly lower than the emissions for an average person in the UK (12.7 tonnes per year) and lower than the average footprint per employee for tech companies (3.5 tonnes).
To help us understand how to reduce our emissions, Supercritical provided insight into what is contributing the most to our emissions; 26% is attributed to consultants used by Tech Nation; 16.2% is from employee pension schemes; 10.4% is the impact of remote working under our flexible working policy; 6% is attributed to business travel (not including employee commutes); and 5% is from food and drink.
Emissions were calculated, in part, using information from employees about their remote working set up and travel activities, alongside an audit of Tech Nation’s operational activities.

Supercritical
Tech Nation has a critical role in the tech community here in the UK and they are leading by example by measuring their emissions, actively reducing where they can, and buying durable carbon removal. It's much easier to set sustainability policies in place when you're early and embed the climate in your decision making process. It's much harder to turn it around at growth stage when it's not in your culture to consider carbon emissions. More than that, reporting on carbon emissions and net zero are starting to be regulated. The cost of inaction is high.
Net zero policies
Supercritical estimated that Tech Nation could reduce emissions by 9% (to 2.95 tonnes CO2 per employee yearly) by making specific policy changes and by engaging with suppliers (including consultants).
Policy changes we have now introduced include:
Vegetarian-only food and minimising food waste
According to Supercritical’s survey of Tech Nation’s employees, Tech Nationers already eat less meat than the average person, but until now we have served meat at company events and had no restrictions on what food an employee can expense for business-related meals. To reduce the carbon impact of our events and meals - and to lead by example - we are committing to vegetarian-only meals at Tech Nation events or paid for by Tech Nation. This policy will reduce our emissions by 7.7 tonnes of CO2 in a year.
We are also implementing a policy to use food-sharing app Olio - an alumnus of our growth programmes and a current participant on the new Net Zero X programme for late-stage climate tech companies - to ensure leftover food from our events does not go to waste. Not only will this minimise food waste at our events, but it will also have the added benefit of supporting people in need of food in a cost-of-living crisis.
Sustainable offices
We’ve ensured that our two main offices - in London and Manchester - have sustainable credentials. Our space in Bonded Warehouse in Manchester runs off of 100% renewable energy, and in London we recently moved to Fora which we carefully selected in part due to its net zero commitment.
Fora’s own emissions reductions strategy includes:
- Conducting energy audits to identify short and long-term improvements.
- Implementing AI and sensor technology to optimise system performance.
- Offering discounts on cycle hire and bike repair to encourage residents to commute by bike
- A “zero waste to landfill” plan which ensures material consumption is reduced and materials reused as much as possible with an average 60% recycling rate across all buildings.
- Engaging with residents and teams to educate and stimulate behaviour change.
- Using 100% renewable energy and certified carbon neutral gas, and utilising on-site energy generation where possible.
- Working with Trees for Cities to plant thousands of urban trees a year and collaborating with Cool Earth to ensure the continued protection of an acre of rainforest in Peru.
- Running a terra{fora} event series which promotes sustainability initiatives with other London-based companies
Train-first travel
While Tech Nation’s travel emissions are relatively low (with flights contributing only 6% of travel emissions), implementing a train-first travel policy which replaces domestic flights (for example, between London and Scotland) with train journeys will reduce emissions by half a tonne of CO2 a year.
We have committed to a train-first travel policy for all journeys under six hours.
Pensions
According to Cushon, the average UK pension pot unwittingly finances 23 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year - the equivalent of running nine family cars.
Supercritical highlighted that Tech Nation’s current pension provider is ‘moving towards net zero’ by allocating more money to the Multi-Factor ESG Low Carbon fund. This is an important step, but it is not yet in line with best practice for climate-positive pensions, outlined by the Green Pensions guide:
- Net zero target across the entire portfolio of pension assets, including halving emissions by 2030
- Pension investments into climate change solutions (renewable energy, sustainable mobility, carbon removal, regenerative farming, etc.)
- Active engagement with investee companies to push them to reduce emissions
- Controlled divestment from those companies or industries (such as coal) that have no intention to reduce their high emissions
Given that pensions are responsible for 16.2% of Tech Nation’s emissions, we are engaging with our current pension provider to encourage its adoption of further climate-positive steps. If a decision is made to change to a different provider, we will ensure the new provider has climate-positive credentials and is committed to best practice for reaching net zero.
Supplier Engagement strategy
With more than a quarter of Tech Nation’s emissions resulting from external consultants and agencies, we’re engaging with these suppliers to gather more information on their own emissions reductions activities. This includes asking suppliers:
- If they have measured their carbon footprint
- About their total emissions, emissions intensity metric (per revenue) and detailing which emission sources are included
- What their net zero journey and goals are
- If they already do any offsetting, or invest in any carbon removal
The hope is that this will encourage our suppliers to also review their practices and make climate-positive changes, and we will be supporting suppliers with resources to do so. Supercritical estimate that this could reduce Tech Nation’s own emissions by 5.4 tonnes of CO2 annually.
Going further, we are also drafting a procurement policy that requires consulting firms we work with to measure their footprints by 2024 and have a formal Net Zero target by 2025.
Carbon Removals
Investing in permanent carbon removal specifically removes the equivalent emissions generated by Tech Nation this year - as opposed to carbon avoidance offsets which balances a carbon footprint by preventing the equivalent emissions elsewhere.
Our aim is to neutralise Tech Nation’s current and historic emissions over time through permanent carbon removals. This year, we will be removing 368 tonnes of CO2 emitted by Tech Nation. This ensures we are removing the emissions Tech Nation created in the last financial year (280 tonnes) and begins to neutralise our historical emissions. We carried this out by taking a portfolio approach to ensure we are supporting multiple carbon removals methods. A part of our focus was also on co-benefits associated with the nature based solutions we have invested in, which includes helping remote communities gain access to healthcare, gain employment and education.
To ensure we were investing in the most credible carbon removal projects, we worked with Net Zero alumni companies Supercritical and Earthly, with part of our carbon removals going towards UNDO, part of our Net Zero X Programme. We also followed three main remits given Tech Nation’s focus area, which included, international sustainable development, carbon removals for the UK and technological carbon removals.
Through Supercritical, we will be investing in technological and permanent carbon removals. These are the solutions that need urgent attention and investment to scale. These include:
- Biochar: A charcoal-like substance produced by pyrolysis, when waste biomass is heated in the absence of oxygen.
- Enhanced Weathering, with net zero X programme company, UNDO: Naturally occurring erosion chemically weathers rock when CO2 in rainwater binds with it. Enhanced weathering accelerates this natural process by crushing rock and spreading it on land to increase the surface area of the rock.
- Bio-oil: Created when biomass undergoes pyrolysis. Bio-oil is then injected underground for geologic storage.
- Direct Air Capture: Uses fans to pass air through a filter that binds with CO2, which is then turned into a fluid and injected underground.
Through Earthly, we will be investing in three nature based carbon removal projects, which include co-benefits to support local communities and protect biodiversity.
- Seaweed farming in Cornwall: Seaweed grows quickly, rapidly removing carbon from the atmosphere and creating shelter and food for wildlife. Seaweed is also a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel, plastic and fertiliser, reducing industrial carbon emissions and helping to create a circular economy.
- Protection of Mai Ddombe, the 2nd largest intact rainforest: This project not only reduces forest and biodiversity loss but is providing community prosperity through vital investments into the local area. It has protected 300,000 hectares of vital Bonobo and Forest elephant habitat as well as some of the most important wetlands in the world around Lake Mai Ndombe. The project supports local people by increasing access to education and vital medical care.
- Agroforestry, supporting small-holder farmers in Kenya: Local farmers are trained to integrate tree planting with their farmed lands, which protects their crops from extreme weather events like drought, increases biodiversity, natural carbon sequestration and provides a more sustainable income.
