Inclusive Innovation: Unlocking Entrepreneurship Opportunities for People with Disabilities

Discover our research findings and recommendations for unlocking entrepreneurship opportunities for disabled founders in the UK, and beyond.

Entrepreneurship is overwhelmingly perceived as a force for good among people with disabilities in the UK. But, based on our research, one in three disabled people see entrepreneurship as a career path that’s inaccessible to them. Our goal with Tech Nation’s Creo programme is to change that.

In this report, Inclusive Innovation: Unlocking Entrepreneurship Opportunities for People with Disabilities, we seek to champion disabled entrepreneurs and, through our comprehensive survey of nearly 700 people with disabilities, we explore their perceptions of entrepreneurship, the barriers, the potential solutions, and how to widen access.

Key Findings:

  • People with disabilities generally view entrepreneurship positively and acknowledge its ability to drive employment opportunities and innovation.
  • However, more than 1 in 3 of the disabled people we surveyed feel entrepreneurship is inaccessible to them and many lack the confidence to pursue it as a career option.
  • Physical accessibility issues, a lack of support systems, and discrimination or bias are seen as the biggest barriers to entrepreneurship.
  • People with disabilities say greater access to startup funding, mentorship, and training schemes would make them more likely to pursue entrepreneurship.
